Anne Cary Lee Jacob OBITUARY

Anne Cary Lee Jacob OBITUARY

Mrs. Anne Cary Lee Jacob died peacefully at her home at the Algonquin House in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sept. 1, 2024. She was 96 years old. She was born on March 12, 1928, an only child, in Evergreen, Alabama to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lee, Jr., who predeceased her. She attended the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. She married H. Young Dempsey, Jr. (“Jack”), and they lived in Jacksonville, AL, where she taught elementary school. Jack predeceased her in 1971, as did their only child, H. Young Dempsey III of Daphne, AL, who died in 1988 at the age of 38.

After the death of her husband, she moved to Williamsburg, VA, where she again taught elementary school. While there, she met the widower Clyde H Jacob, Jr., of Norfolk. They

courted and were married in Norfolk in 1973. He predeceased her on May 4, 1998 in Norfolk.

Anne Cary had a wonderful life in Norfolk. She and Clyde had two different sailboats and cruised the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from their berth at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Cuisine was a talent of hers and she introduced deep South and Creole dishes, including file gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp creole, and red velvet cake, to her family and friends. This was well before the popularity of this cuisine made the national scene. Most importantly she truly enjoyed her new and many friends with whom she played bridge, competed in tennis, regularly traveled, and socialized.

Anne Cary was active as a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk and served on the Altar Guild and on the Women of the Church.

Anne Cary is survived by a granddaughter, Katie Finch Dempsey Reed (spouse Patrick), of Montgomery, AL, and great grandchildren Harpin “Harp” Young and Eleanore James. She is also survived by her stepchildren Clyde H Jacob III (and spouse Dabney Dalton Jacob) of New Orleans; Clay Reade Jacob (and spouse Lynn Forgrieve Jacob), of Richmond; and Catherine Tait Jacob (spouse Steven Meyers), of Berkeley, California.
