Terry Andrew Dettmer OBITUARY

PORTSMOUTH – Terry Andrew Dettmer, 72, of the 4400 block of Winchester Dr. passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024 in a local hospital. He was born on December 23, 1951 in Portsmouth to the late Joseph and Lucille Dettmer. Terry was a graduate of Old Dominion University. He also taught Sunday School and was a Scout Master, providing coaching and support to Boy Scout Troops. He retired as an environmental inspector for the Virginia State Health Department. Terry was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Portsmouth.

He is survived by his wife, Karen T. Dettmer; two sons, Rev. Michael A. Dettmer and wife Gabriella and Rev. James M. Dettmer and wife Alicia; four sisters, Diana Gibbs and husband Ben, Celia Keller and husband Dale, Glenda Hartman and husband Brian, and Ellen Johnson and husband Lou; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Hannah, Noah, and Wesley; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

The family will receive friends Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel on Monday evening from 7-8:30 PM. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at Sturtevant Event Center.
