Norfolk State QB Otto Kuhns to return this week from NCAA suspension https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/16/norfolk-state-qb-otto-kuhns-to-return-this-week-from-ncaa-suspension/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 00:11:45 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7370951 COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Norfolk State will get back its preseason All-MEAC quarterback this week, head coach Dawson Odums confirmed Monday.

Otto Kuhns has fully served a four-game suspension the NCAA handed him a week before the season started.

Odums said Kuhns will be available, but clarified that Jalen Daniels will remain the Spartans’ starting quarterback.

Kuhns’ return allows Norfolk State to open up the playbook should Daniels go down or there is a need for Kuhns to play as opposed to one of the other inexperienced backups, Odums said.

“Daniels will start,” Odums said. “But what it does allow us to do is that the guys that were behind Daniels for those first four games were inexperienced guys. So now we’re able to do a little bit more as we can open that playbook up and dive into it a little bit with some things that we know can give teams a problem.”

W&M 12th, 13th in national polls

William & Mary jumped a spot to No. 12 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll and remained No. 13 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll after a 28-21 victory at Wofford on Saturday.

The Tribe (2-1) piled up 428 total yards, including 243 on the ground, against Wofford. W&M held the Terriers to just seven points in the second half.

After Bronson Yoder ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns, the Tribe ranks 15th nationally with 196.7 rushing yards per game.

  • A.C. Reynolds High (North Carolina) quarterback Ely Hamrick has become the University of Virginia’s first commitment for the 2026 class, according to 247sports.com. He played for Bradenton (Florida) IMG’s in-state team last season, passing for 1,244 yards with 19 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Danny Edwards won the 100-lap Late Model feature by 3.826 seconds over Mark Wertz, who nipped Ryan Matthews for runner-up honors by a mere 7-thousandths of a second. It was Danny’s second triumph of the year.

Greg Edwards placed fifth. He took the green flag with a 17-point lead on Wertz, his closest pursuer.

Neither Connor Hall nor Brenden Queen, Langley standouts whose primary responsibilities are on the CARS Tour these days, was in the field for a race that lasted just more than 32 minutes.

In other divisions:

Enduro: Alex Floroff captured another victory, followed by runner-up Chris Kane and Ryan Vinson among 18 drivers.

Floroff leads the division with five victories, and he entered the 30-lap race just one point ahead of Vinson for the class lead.

Super Street: Landon Abbott prevailed unofficially by 0.792 of a second over Sammy Gaita through 40 laps and more than 15:40.
Joe Stuck placed third among 14 competitors, 2.602 seconds behind Abbott.

Dale Nichols, the points leader, came in fifth.

Super Truck: Chris Bechtel scored a 25-lap triumph among 12 drivers, beating runner-up Chris McEvoy by 688-thousandths of a second. Donald Brown was third, 1.956 seconds off the pace, as Bechtel reached Dale Lemonds Victory Lane for the third time in 2024.

Bechtel began the evening third in points. The drivers ahead of him were Chase McAdams and Paige Cain, who placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the race.

Virginia Sprints: After a pair of 10-lap heats set the feature field of 13, Jerald Harris cruised to a 6.711-second victory over Aaron Leach. It took 25 laps and just more than 6:28 for Harris.

Champ Kart: Jordan Valdes won a 20-lap race that took just less than 7 1/2 minutes and featured a thrilling finish.

Valdes edged Trace Wyatt by an almost-imperceptible 8-thousandths of a second. Those two were more than 15 1/2 seconds ahead of the other three drivers.

It was Valdes’ division-leading fifth victory of the year, though third-place Jimmy Carr leads the standings.

The Tides (65-78, 29-39 in the International League’s second half) will play their final road game of the season Sunday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Bulls (70-73, 34-34) won the first two games of the six-game series before dropping the next three.

Justin Armbruester (5-10), who made a rare relief appearance, gave up both Durham hits in four innings — including Bob Seymour’s tying home run with two out in the seventh — but gained the victory. He struck out three and walked two.

Starter Carlos Tavera pitched five brilliant innings, striking out seven and walking two. Western Branch High graduate Colin Selby struck out two in the sixth inning, and Nick Vespi got his second save by pitching the 11th.

The Tides went ahead in the sixth on a double steal, with Forrest Wall taking second and Samuel Basallo stealing home.
Seymour’s blast to right in the seventh tied the game, but Wall’s ground-ball single to center leading off the 11th brought home automatic runner Daniel Johnson with the eventual winning run. Johnson had three of the Tides’ eight hits.

Durham’s Jake Mangum began the bottom of the 11th by reaching on an error by third baseman Noelberth Romero, but automatic runner Nick Schnell stayed put at second.

Vespi induced a double-play grounder by Curtis Mead and stranded Schnell at third by getting Kameron Misner to ground to shortstop for the final out.

Friday night highlights: No. 3 King’s Fork takes control early in domination at Western Branch https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/14/friday-night-highlights-no-3-kings-fork-takes-control-early-in-domination-at-western-branch/ Sat, 14 Sep 2024 04:46:56 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7365960 King’s Fork’s first two drives set the tone Friday night as the third-ranked Bulldogs rolled to a 33-7 Southeastern District victory at Western Branch (1-2) in Chesapeake.

King’s Fork (2-0) went 80 yards on 14 plays on its 7-minute, 25-second opening possession. D’andre Artis-Boone capped the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Zy’Dar’eyus Winn.

After stopping the Bruins on downs at the King’s Fork 36, the Bulldogs marched 64 yards on 10 plays in 4:27. JaVon Ford finished that sequence with a 1-yard TD run.

Reginald Davis completed the first-half scoring by picking off a Derrick Cook pass and returning it 26 yards to the end zone for a 19-0 lead. The Bulldogs held the Bruins to minus-9 yards rushing in the first half.

After a 13-yard TD pass from Artis-Boone to Winn and Jean-Pierre Bile’s second PAT made it 26-0 in the fourth quarter, Western Branch produced a highlight when Ky’Nique Baines ran 75 yards for a TD. It was most of his 84-yard total for the night.

Bubba Anderson capped the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run. He finished with 77 yards on 12 carries.

“We played a complete game,” King’s Fork coach Anthony Joffrion said. “Our kids competed and fought. You know Western Branch is extremely well-coached. We did a great job of switching up some of their formations. The biggest thing we’ve got to fix is just substitutions.”

Ocean Lakes rolls past Tallwood

No. 14 Ocean Lakes scored two touchdowns in less than a minute, and the host Dolphins defeated Tallwood 43-19 in a Beach District battle.

After the Lions cut their deficit to 14-7 on a Jacob Rojas 2-yard run, the Dolphins put together a five-play, 59-yard drive keyed by a 38-yard pass from Noah Colon to Will Maisenbacher. Colon scored on a 2-yard run two plays later.

Tallwood touched the ball on the ensuing kickoff, but didn’t control it. Ocean Lakes fell on it and had possession at the Lions’ 33-yard line. Colon then hit Devin McGill for a 33-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 29-7 with 10:07 left in the first half.

Tallwood countered before halftime. Backed up to the Lions’ 20 and facing a second-and-40, Rojas ran a keeper and turned it into an 80-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to 29-13.

Tallwood pulled within 29-19 late in the third quarter on a Chase Johnson 4-yard run, but the Lions couldn’t get closer.

Ocean Lakes scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

College football previews: NSU, Hampton clash in Battle of the Bay; William & Mary visits Wofford https://www.pilotonline.com/2024/09/13/college-football-previews-nsu-hampton-clash-in-battle-of-the-bay-william-mary-visits-wofford/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 23:20:02 +0000 https://www.pilotonline.com/?p=7366191 Hampton (1-1) at Norfolk State (1-2)

When: 4 p.m. Saturday

On the air: ESPN+, 88.1FM, 91.1FM

The Spartans: Norfolk State got its first victory of the season last week with a 28-23 win over rival Virginia State. Quarterback Jalen Daniels is coming off a three-touchdown performance that helped him earn a MEAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week nod. The Spartans’ run defense has performed well, holding opponents to 127.5 yards per game on the ground after allowing 276 yards per game through the first three games of 2023. Coach Dawson Odums said the Spartans are “a little banged up” and are hoping to “piece back” together an ailing offensive line. If Norfolk State wins on Saturday, it’ll be the first time either team in the rivalry has won consecutive matchups since NSU did it from 2014-2016.

The Pirates: Hampton also got its first victory of 2024 last week, a 33-21 win over Virginia Union. Star running back Elijah Burris found a groove in the run game, totaling 145 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. Hampton likely will continue to use both of its starting-caliber quarterbacks on Saturday. Interim head coach Trent Boykin has said the plan is based on how both Chris Zellous and Malcolm Mays perform during practice the week before a game along with what challenges the opponent’s defense presents. After Mays took the bulk of the game reps in Week 1, Zellous took the bulk of the reps in Week 2. Zellous finished with 177 passing yards and 37 rushing yards, including two rushing TDs. Hampton is hoping to avoid a second straight loss to the Spartans. The road team has had more luck in the series recently — the last time the home team won the Battle of the Bay came in 2015.

No. 13 William & Mary (1-1) at Wofford (1-0)

When: 6 p.m. Saturday

On the air: ESPN+, 92.3FM, TribeAthletics.com

The Tribe: W&M travels to South Carolina for a second consecutive week, having lost its annual game against an FBS opponent 41-20 at Coastal Carolina last week. The passing game and pass defense have been strengths for the Tribe. QB Darius Wilson ranks seventh nationally in passing efficiency (171.4 yards per game). The Tribe ranks fourth in the FCS in pass efficiency and is second in the CAA in passing yards allowed per game (137.5). DL Davin Dzidzienyo and ILB Quinn Osborne set career highs at Coastal Carolina with six and eight tackles, respectively. FS TJ McGill had six tackles in both of W&M’s games.

The Terriers: With road victories at Gardner-Webb and Richmond, Wofford is justifiably getting some votes in the national polls. The Terriers have been tough defensively, ranking in the FCS top 25 in total defense (309 ypg) and scoring defense (19.5 ppg). Their offense has been no slouch either and, with 246.5 passing yards per game, will give the Tribe’s strong pass defense a serious test. Experience, in the form of 16 returning starters, accounts for the fast start. Among them are some All-Southern Conference preseason picks: RB Ryan Ingram, TE Jordan Davis, DL Brandon Maina, LB David Powers and DB Maximus Pulley.

No. 7 Johns Hopkins (1-0) at Christopher Newport (1-0)

When: 5 p.m. Saturday

On the air: CNUsports.com, 99.1FM

The Bluejays: Johns Hopkins fell behind by 17 points in the second quarter of its opener against Division III No. 19 Ithaca, but rallied for a 27-23 victory. The Bluejays defeated the Captains 20-14 in Baltimore a year ago. QB Bay Harvey was 17 of 28 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for a career-high 132 yards and two scores. Cole Crotty had six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. Carson Buordo and Cole Peters had nine tackles each.

The Captains: CNU opened with an easy 42-6 victory at Trine in Indiana. QB Matt Dzierski threw three touchdown passes and RB Gunner White ran for two touchdowns. A good sign was that the Captains’ five touchdown drives were for 64 yards or more. A two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Dzierski completed 13 of 15 passes for 278 yards. Colin Hart had two touchdown receptions. The defense got into the act with Eli Sherfield’s 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Apprentice (1-0) at Washington and Lee (0-1)

When: 2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Wilson Field in Lexington

On the air: generalssports.com

The Builders: Facing the Generals will be a major step up, but Apprentice coach Vincent Brown’s team got off to an excellent start last week, dominating Southern Virginia 44-9, as it hopes to finish much closer to its 9-1 record of 2022 than its 4-6 mark of ’23. Grassfield High graduate Grant Swanger, after two years away from football, threw four touchdown passes, three to speedy receiver T.K. Petty. Ty Taylor ran for 152 yards on 21 carries, while Khamari Moore ran for 127 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The Builders could’ve scored even more, settling for 23-, 25- and 26-yard field goals by Logan Eastman. Benny Nena and Syncere Hawkins led a strong defense, combining for 17 tackles and forcing two fumbles.

The Generals: Having beaten Apprentice 28-9 last year in Newport News, they were predicted second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference behind only defending champion Randolph-Macon. But they lost their opener 48-26 at traditionally strong Salisbury. They traditionally have favored the run, but a 21-0 first-quarter deficit prompted W&L to pass more. They amassed 438 yards of offense, but committed three turnovers. W&L’s Ty Collins went 11 for 16 for 120 yards and three touchdowns in his first game as a starter.
