Big Lots is closing two stores in Hampton Roads as part of a nationwide shutdown of underperforming stores.
The discount retailer’s website shows closing notices for its locations at 5900 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. at Janaf Shopping Yard in Norfolk and 1650 General Booth Blvd. in the Red Mill area of Virginia Beach. The Hill and Nextstar Media first reported the closures and that while Big Lots did not release a closing list, roughly 300 locations on the website show “closing this location” notices.
Big Lots reported that it could close up to 315 stores as part of an amended loan agreement related to its efforts to “aggressively address underperforming stores” in an Aug. 2 Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The company alluded to 244 underperforming stores this year when it experienced a 10% drop in first-quarter sales from the previous year.
The Big Lots website lists 1,389 stores, including 42 in Virginia and 12 in Hampton Roads.
