HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
State champion Hampton High swept the Class 4 all-state awards in boys basketball.
Crabbers guard Malik Johnson was the Player of the Year and Hampton’s Eric Brown was Coach of the Year.
Johnson recorded a game-high 10 rebounds along with eight points, five assists and three steals to help the Crabbers beat Tuscarora of Leesburg in the Class 4 state title game. During the season, he averaged 13.9 points, 2.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals.
Brown guided the Crabbers (25-2) to their fifth state title and first since 2012. He has a career record of 180-84 in 11 seasons at Hampton.
Joining Johnson on the first team was teammate Daron Baugh and Churchland junior Sincere Jones.
Churchland senior Aveyon Jordan, who was sadly shot and killed earlier this month, was named to the second team.

Two Hokies guards to enter portal
Virginia Tech guards Sean Pedulla and MJ Collins will enter the transfer portal.
Pedulla, a 6-1 junior from Edmond, Oklahoma, made his announcement on X. He led the Hokies with 16.4 points a game and also averaged 4.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals. He said he would “strongly” consider returning to Blacksburg for his final season.
Pedulla was an All-ACC third-team selection and the only Hokies player to earn postseason honors from the league.
Multiple media outlets reported that Collins will enter the portal. The 6-4 sophomore from Clover, South Carolina, averaged 7.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
Ware says he’ll stick with ODU
Guard Deion Ware, who was part of Old Dominion’s early 2024 signing class in November, announced on social media that he will remain with the Monarchs.
Recruited by Jeff Jones’ coaching staff, Ware said he has “full trust” in new ODU coach Mike Jones.
Ware (6-4, 180 pounds), a New Orleans native, played for Montverde Academy (Florida) this season. He’s a three-star recruit, according to 247sports.com.

NSU shifts series with Delaware State
Norfolk State’s baseball team has changed the schedule of its series against Delaware State this week due to inclement weather forecasted for Thursday.
Instead of playing Thursday, the teams will meet in a doubleheader at noon Friday. Saturday’s scheduled noon game won’t change.
- Christopher Newport’s home game against North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday was postponed due to a forecast of rain in Newport News. No makeup date has been announced.

- Katie Mathies went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs in the first game and Lauren Sizemore hit a two-run homer in the second game as DePauw swept a softball doubleheader at Christopher Newport 9-6 and 7-5 on Wednesday. Marly Hoefler had two hits and three RBIs and Katie Currin and Delaney Nuckols each hit two-run homers for the Captains (15-4).
- William & Mary’s Mary Grace Dunigan has been named the CAA Women’s Golfer of the Week after her third-place finish at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday in Williamsburg. The freshman from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, shot rounds of 77, 72 and 75 to finish two shots behind the winner.
- Christopher Newport’s Katie Stevens has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year. She won C2C titles in the weight throw and shot put and placed 12th in the weight throw at the NCAA Championships. Also picking up honors from CNU were Evan Young (Men’s Rookie of the Year), Daniel Ferrante (Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year) and both the men’s and women’s coaches (Coaching Staffs of the Year).
