Reading snaps Admirals’ four-game win streak with overtime victory

Matt Brown scored less than 3 minutes into overtime for the game-winner and Brayden Guy added two goals and an assist as the Reading Royals edged the Norfolk Admirals 5-4 before 2,812 fans Wednesday night at Scope.

The Admirals (14-7-2-1), who saw their four-game winning streak end, stand in fourth place in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference with 31 points. Reading (8-12-1-1) is tied for last in the conference.

Carson Golder scored two goals for Norfolk, while Denis Smirnov and Carson Musser also found the back of the net. Musser added an assist and Stepan Timofeyev had two.

Reading jumped in front 2-0 on goals by Will Zmolek and Guy less than 8 minutes in. Smirnov cut the Admirals’ deficit to 2-1 with 4:31 left in the first period, but Guy scored his second goal to put the Royals ahead 3-1 with 2:01 remaining.

Norfolk knotted the game at 3 with Golder’s two goals, which came with 7:43 and 1:07 left in the second period. Golder now has 11 goals on the season.

Musser’s third goal of the season put the Admirals ahead 4-3 with 8:05 left in regulation, but Shane Sellar tied it with 3:52 left to send the game to overtime.

Reading outshot Norfolk 19-14.

The two teams will play again at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
