The original lead singer for the iconic 1990s California punk band Sublime died before the songs he recorded ever got major airplay, turned popular and seduced legions into becoming the band’s decades-loyal fanbase.

Bradley Nowell died from a heroin overdose in 1996. He was 28. His son, Jakob, was an infant.

Jakob is the same age his dad was when he died and will headline the Point Break Music Festival this weekend in Virginia Beach — singing lead vocals for Sublime.

The two-day festival will take place near 5th Street at the Oceanfront and Jakob has a strong message — full of rock-star panache — for anyone unsure about attending.

“They need to get serious and buy some tickets,” he said in an interview, in a so-SoCal accent. “Buy some extras, and if they can’t use the extras, scalp them. But when you go there, you’re going to have the most killer time ever.”

The first major concert Jakob played with Sublime was this year at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. He has no plans to tour permanently with his dad’s band, he said.

Sublime is scheduled to play Saturday after the night’s other headliner Wiz Khalifa, a rapper who scored No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with the songs “Black and Yellow” in 2010 and “See You Again” in 2015.

The festival will be headlined by reggae-rock band Rebelution on Sunday night.
