Lionsbridge avenges loss to Charlottesville

Lionsbridge FC moved back into first place in USL League Two’s Chesapeake Division, defeating the host Charlottesville Blues 2-1 Wednesday night.

The Lions (7-1) are 4-1 in league play for 12 points. Their only loss came to Charlottesville, 2-0 on May 26 in Newport News.

The Blues went ahead in the 22nd minute, but Lionsbridge’s Josh Baker netted the tying goal from long distance in the 33rd.
In the 37th, Denis Krioutchenkov scored the go-ahead goal after a Charlottesville turnover, and the Lions made the lead stand up over the last 53 minutes on the St. Anne’s-Belfield pitch.

Lionsbridge next will head to Baltimore to face Christos FC at 6 p.m. Saturday.

VBCFC hopes to build on first victory

Virginia Beach City FC’s next match will be June 12 against Grove United at Robins Stadium in Richmond.

VBCFC (1-3) is coming off its first victory, Sunday’s 3-2 triumph over the Alexandria Rough Diamonds (0-4) at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.

The hosts went ahead 3-0, thanks to an own goal in the 10th minute, Zach Golden’s goal in the 38th and Riley Usher’s goal in the 48th.
Alexandria replied with goals by Maguire Alden in the 66th and Brandon Nicholas in the 69th, but VBCFC held on.

JMU again beats ODU in Royal Rivalry

James Madison captured the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge, pulling away from Old Dominion by a 14.5-7.5 margin in the all-sports competition.

JMU won 16.5-7.5 in the initiative’s first season, 2022-23.

Royal Rivalry points are awarded for head-to-head competition or for the best finish in mutual conference championship events in sports where head-to-head competition does not occur. Half-points are granted in case of a tie. Both regular-season and postseason matchups are included in head-to-head calculations.

Six Monarchs named CRCA Scholar Athletes

The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced its 2023-24 Scholar Athlete awards, and six Old Dominion Monarchs were recognized: Sydnee Blackburn, Lucy Brennan, Maddie Enns, Ellen Gortz, Haven Habhab and Bekah Kimman.

Virginia’s honorees were Lauren Benedict, Cameron Bentley, Dylan Bentley, Lily Bernero, Emma Bradish, Helene Dimitrijev, Savannah Fox, Sydney Fratamico, Eva Frohnhofer, Nora Grabcheski, Lily Jarrett, Lauren Jochims, Paige Loh, Ashlyn McGinn, Ailbhe O’Grady, Zoe Tekeian and Caeley Tierney.

A total of 770 student-athletes from 72 schools were recognized in NCAA Division I. They must be in at least their second year of eligibility and maintain an average cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher.

They must have rowed in an NCAA-eligible boats for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or have raced in a conference championship or NCAA championship.
