Virginia Tech gets commitment from point guard of top-ranked high school team

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Paul VI Catholic High (Chantilly) point guard Ben Hammond announced on social media that he has committed to Virginia Tech.

The three-star recruit, who is 5-10, had previously committed to Rhode Island.

Paul VI finished No. 1 in the final MaxPreps basketball rankings last season and won the VISAA Division I state championship.

UVA adds 3 transfers

The University of Virginia has added three transfers in the past two days, with Vanderbilt forward Carter Lang, a Charlottesville native, announcing his commitment Tuesday on social media.

The Cavaliers picked up Duke’s TJ Power and San Diego State’s Elijah Saunders via the transfer portal on Monday.

Saunders, a 6-8 forward, was the most productive of the three additions last season. He averaged 6.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in 20.2 minutes for the Aztecs.

Power, a 6-9 forward, averaged 2.1 points and 0.7 rebounds in 6.7 minutes for the Blue Devils.

Lang, who is 6-9, averaged 1.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 11.5 minutes a game as a freshman for the Commodores last season.

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Trio of Tides earn honors

Three Norfolk Tides players have picked up honors this week.

Pitcher Chayce McDermott has been named the International League’s Pitcher of the Week. He combined with two relievers on a no-hitter against Nashville on Friday night, tossing 6.2 scoreless innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts and two walks to earn the victory.

Also, the Baltimore Orioles named third baseman Coby Mayo and pitcher Cade Povich as their Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month.

Mayo hit .330 with nine homers, 25 RBIs and a 1.052 OPS. Povich posted a 1.03 ERA and 0.76 WHIP with 40 strikeouts in 26.1 innings.

The Tides (16-17) opened a six-game series at Memphis on Tuesday night.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

HU coach resigns

Hampton University softball coach Monique White has resigned after three seasons with the program.

She posted a 51-102 record. The Pirates went 17-35 this season.

  • Thirteen Norfolk State players were MEAC All-Academic selections: Savannah Drozda, Rylie Gilbreath, Loren Hudson, Maya Johnson, Victoria Ruiz, Lauren Sheehan, Emory Shorts, Victoria Taylor, Kira Turner, Brierra Tyler, Leah Wisswell, Emma Zieg and Lisa Zorb.
  • Christopher Newport’s Jamie Martin has been named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pitcher of the Week.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

UVA third at NCAA regional

The University of Virginia stands in third place at 9-over 585 after the second day of the NCAA women’s golf Cle Elum Regional on Tuesday in Washington.

The Cavaliers’ Amanda Sambach is tied for fifth individually with a 1-under 143.

Virginia Tech is 10th in the team standings.

James Madison’s Kendall Turner, a former Great Bridge High star, is tied for 30th individually at 2-over 146 in the Bermuda Run Regional.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE

CNU picks up several awards

Christopher Newport collected several Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference postseason awards on Tuesday.

The Captains’ Kelsey Winters was Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, while Carys May was Rookie of the Year. Also, CNU picked up Coaching Staff of the Year honors with head coach Lisa Valentine at the helm.

Winters scored a league-best 90 points and collected 68 assists.

The Captains (13-6) will host the Catholic-Meredith winner in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at noon Sunday.

  • Norfolk boxer Keyshawn Davis will fight Miguel Madueno of Mexico on July 6 in Newark, New Jersey. It will be on the undercard to the WBC lightweight world championship fight between Shakur Stevenson and Artem Harutyunyan.
  • Hampton’s Antoine Spencer has been named the CAA Track Athlete of the Week. The Waldorf, Maryland, native finished second in the 200-meter dash at the Aggie Invitational with a time of 20.66.
  • The Apprentice baseball team (39-8) has earned the No. 4 seed in the USCAA Small College World Series and will open the tournament at 10 a.m. Monday against No. 5 Atlantis in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
