Competing in the Big Ten is difficult for any college athlete, especially a freshman. But Great Bridge High senior golfer Trey Marrion is giving himself reason for confidence before he heads to the University of Illinois.
Last Sunday, Marrion won the Boonsboro Invitational men’s tournament. His 5-under-par 66 in the final round for a 6-under 207 gained him the Fox Puss Trophy by three strokes over the defending champion, fellow teenager Logan Reilly of Lovettsville in Northern Virginia.
Marrion carded rounds of 69-72-66. Reilly claimed the runner-up spot at 3 under, finishing with a 70 Sunday.
That’s the day Marrion recorded six birdies, one bogey and 11 pars. He played the par-5 16th hole at 4 under par for three days.
Amherst native Ryan Stinnett, a former champ from Virginia Tech who led heading into the final round, shared third with Marine Corps Capt. Nick Brediger at 1 under after shooting a 1-over 72 Sunday.
He’s a lumberjack, and he’s more than OK: Matt Cogar of Grafton, West Virginia, won the inaugural Stihl Timbersports North American Trophy event last weekend. It was an evolution of the previous U.S. Trophy event.
Competing on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk against a strong field of both Americans and Canadians for the first time, Cogar took the gold after falling short in the Trophy event in 2022 and 2023, notching a blazing 56.90-second time in the finals.
He qualified for the World Trophy event in Milan, Italy, where he will represent the United States.
Summit attendee: Norfolk State senior volleyball player Adlene Jideofor was selected as one of seven fellows for the 2024 Black Student Athlete Summit. She will represent the Spartans at the May 23-26 event on the campus of Southern California.
The summit aims to empower Black athletes to make the most of opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.
“I’m so proud, but not surprised by Adlene’s accomplishment,” Norfolk State volleyball coach Kathy Bullock said in a school release. “She’s a born leader and always strives to be the best.”
Boys and girls in the boat: Norfolk Academy recently gained plenty of honors at the Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships at Bugsy Beach in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
The Bulldogs won the girls varsity eight, boys varsity eight, boys varsity four, the boys 2V4, the boys 2V8 and girls junior four.
The EVSRA also includes Cape Henry Collegiate, Catholic, Granby, Great Bridge, Hickory, Maury, Norfolk Collegiate, Princess Anne and James River of the Richmond area. The Norfolk Youth Rowing Club, Williamsburg Boat Club, Elizabeth City Rowing Club, Coastal Virginia Community, the Mobjack Rowing Association and River City Crew of Richmond also provide entries.
