Norfolk State’s football season opener will be nationally televised in primetime.

The Spartans’ MEAC/SWAC Challenge game against Florida A&M on Aug. 24 in Atlanta will be televised by ABC (WVEC locally) at 7:30 p.m.

ESPN announced 12 games that will be carried on its networks, including ABC, for the upcoming season on Tuesday.

Green Run QB commits to UConn

Green Run quarterback K’Saan Farrar has committed to play football at UConn.

The 6-3, 215-pounder is a three-star recruit and the top-rated quarterback in Virginia, according to 247Sports. He also received interest from East Carolina, Liberty, Charlotte and Buffalo among other schools.

Farrar passed for 3,086 yards and 36 touchdowns and ran for 577 yards and seven scores in leading the Stallions to a 12-1 record last season.

Richmond to join Patriot League

The University of Richmond will leave the Coastal Athletic Association and join the Patriot League in football only, starting in 2025, the Patriot League announced Tuesday.

The Spiders have been a member of the CAA since 2007. They won the FCS championship in 2008 and have made the playoffs the past two seasons.

The Patriot League currently consists of seven schools: Lafayette, Holy Cross, Colgate, Georgetown, Fordham, Lehigh and Bucknell. Georgetown and Fordham compete in the league in football only.

Tide defensive lineman picks Hokies

Former Alabama defensive lineman Khurtiss Perry has committed to transfer to Virginia Tech, he announced on social media.

The 6-2, 265-pound Pike Road, Alabama, native is a former ESPN 300 recruit. He was a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports.

Perry has three years of eligibility remaining.

Tides-IronPigs game postponed

The Norfolk Tides’ series opener against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Tuesday at Harbor Park has been postponed due to inclement weather.

It will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader Wednesday, starting at 5:35 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.

Fans may exchange their tickets from Tuesday’s game at the Harbor Park box office for any remaining regular-season home game this season, except for July 3.

UVA stays in first

The University of Virginia men maintained a five-shot lead over Auburn after the second of the three-day NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers and Tigers both shot 2-over-par 290s.

UVA’s Deven Patel is tied for second individually at 3-under 141 after shooting a 2-over 74 Tuesday and is one of four Cavaliers in the top 10.

Apprentice stays alive in tourney

Riggs Ellis hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Apprentice School to a 5-4 victory over Penn State York in its second elimination game of the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series on Tuesday in DuBois, Pennsylvania.

The Builders (41-9) lost their opening game of the tournament to Atlantis University 11-8 on Monday, but bounced back to win two elimination games on Tuesday. They blanked Wright State Lake 4-0 in the early game as Isaac McCallister tossed a five-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Nate Yeary hit a solo homer and drove in two runs for Apprentice against Penn State York.

Apprentice will face Miami-Hamilton at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

  • William & Mary and George Mason announced that their scheduled game Tuesday in Fairfax has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather. The game won’t be rescheduled. The Tribe (29-22) will close its regular season with a three-game series at Campbell beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday.
  • Tuesday’s game between Virginia Tech and James Madison in Blacksburg was halted by inclement weather after two innings and declared no contest with Dukes leading 2-1.
  • James Madison outfielder Brendan O’Donnell has been named the Sun Belt Player of the Week after hitting .667 with two doubles, two triples and a home run.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

VWU’s Adams earns top ODAC honor

Virginia Wesleyan’s Emma Adams has been named the ODAC Pitcher of the Year and the Marlins’ Brandon Elliott is the league’s Coach of the Year.

Adams, who posted a 13-0 record and a 0.93 ERA in the conference, joined teammates Mackenzie Myers and Karley Beltran on the all-conference first team.

VWU’s Olivia Knight and Laci Campbell made the all-conference second team, while Julia Piotrowski and Joslyn Woodard were on the third team.

  • Christopher Newport’s Jamie Martin has been named the Division III Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week. She tossed a no-hitter in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.
