Several state players headed to MLB Draft Combine

William & Mary pitcher Nate Knowles has been invited to the fourth annual MLB Draft Combine, which will be held June 18-23 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Knowles, the first All-American pitcher in Tribe history, went 8-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 80 innings. The junior from Arlington was the CAA Pitcher of the Year.

The MLB Draft will be held July 14-16 in Arlington, Texas.

Also invited were UVA’s Ethan Anderson (Cox), Harrison Didawick (Western Branch), Griff O’Ferrall and Casey Saucke, Virginia Tech’s Carson DeMartini (Ocean Lakes) and Wyatt Parliament, James Madison outfielder Fenwick Trimble (Cox), George Mason pitcher Konner Eaton and Liberty pitchers Cole Hertzler and Garrett Horn.

SWIMMING

Beach athletes compete at trials

Three Tide swimming athletes from Virginia Beach competed in the U.S. Olympic swimming trials Tuesday in Indianapolis.

Kayla Wilson (Norfolk Academy/Stanford) was 29th after preliminary heats in the women’s 100-meter freestyle, while Emily Claesson (Kellam/Virginia Tech) was tied for 36th. Sophia Knapp (First Colonial/UVA) was 36th in the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle.

Also on Tuesday, Virginia Tech’s Carmen Weiler Sastre qualified for Spain’s Olympic team in the 100-meter backstroke. She becomes the third Hokies swimmer to earn a trip to Paris. Mario Molla Yanes made Spain’s men’s team in the 100 butterfly and Virginia Tech alum Ian Ho made Hong Kong’s team in the 50 freestyle.

Meanwhile, on Monday night, former UVA star Paige Madden qualified for the Olympics in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay. She placed third in 200 freestyle final and will be joined on the relay team by Katie Ledecky, Claire Weinstein and Erin Gemmell.

On Sunday night, UVA’s Gretchen Walsh followed up a world record in the 100-meter butterfly by qualifying for the Olympics. She won the event in 55.31 seconds.

Oscar Smith DB chooses Cincinnati

Oscar Smith defensive back Jahmari DeLoatch has committed to Cincinnati for 2025.

The first-team All-Region 6A selection chose the Bearcats over Virginia Tech and Wake Forest among at least 12 other schools.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Landstown trio make all-state team

Landstown’s Jace McSwain, Ryan Walsh and Kamar Wilson each made the VHSL Class 6 all-state first team.

  • Bruton’s Mark Wilson, Eli Mitchell and Jordon Bridges made the VHSL Class 2 all-state first team. The Panthers’ Brody McHenry, Aidyn Smith, Kai Gardin and Liam Ferguson are on the second team.

COLLEGE LACROSSE

Six CNU players are all-region

Six Christopher Newport players hauled in all-region honors, which were announced by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association on Monday.

Alex Brendes, Warner Cabaniss, Andrew Cook and Ryan Young secured first-team accolades. Drew Miller earned second-team honors and Coby Auslander received honorable mention.

COLLEGE GOLF

UVA players earn academic honors

Five UVA women’s players have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team: Megan Propeck, Amanda Sambach, Rebecca Skoler, Celeste Valinho and Jaclyn LaHa.

UVA men’s players Bryan Lee, Paul Chang, Chris Fosdick and Josh Duangmanee were named to the All-ACC Academic Team.

  • The Baltimore Orioles claimed right-hander Nick Avila off release waivers from the San Francisco Giants, optioned him to the Norfolk Tides and placed him on the seven-day injured list with right shoulder impingement.
  • The New England Patriots have signed former James Madison offensive tackle Liam Fornadel, who played in the UFL this past season. Fornadel was a second-team All-American for the Dukes in 2019.
